Free circulation zone for motor insurance
Some two million UK drivers take their vehicles to the EU every year. This number excludes visits by motorists in Northern Ireland who visit the Republic of Ireland. BIBA’s joint research with the ABI in October 2019 revealed that only 44% of respondents realised they would need a Green Card to visit an EU27 country in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Far fewer had any idea that they would need a separate Green Card for any caravan or trailer they are towing. The current Political Declaration is silent on this point which needs to be addressed at a very early stage of any transition period post Brexit.
CALLS FOR ACTION
- For the UK to remain in the free-circulation zone to avoid the need for Green Cards while driving in the EU.
- For the provision of Green Cards (if needed) to be modernised and digitised and follow the more sustainable example set by the electronic delivery of motor insurance certificates.
